MNCARS’ Exhibition Spaces

MNCARS’ is the proposal to develop new exhibition spaces for the permanent collection of the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid. Surface area 3,600 m2

Madrid, Spain 2008

The new rooms of the permanent collection of the Reina Sofia Museum respond to the curatorial concept of exhibiting the collections grouped in thematic units associated with many other spatial units, as neutral as they are propositional. Here the architecture plays an essential role in the construction of the space, while at the same time trying to disappear in support of the exhibited works.

To achieve this effect, a lot of work has been done on the ideal proportions that make each room so balanced that while building and delimiting the space to make it simple and understandable, it is imperceptible to the viewer, who turns all his attention to the object of the visit.

This process of making architecture disappear has generated an enormous amount of work to minimize any physical accident of surfaces and focus architectural resources on the construction of the walls, floor and ceiling.

The design stimulates a conversation about the traditional idea of the flexible museum as an open-space industrial plan, reminding us that, without underestimating that model, a set of permanent, interconnected rooms can also be a layout open to a wide diversity of formats.
